Brasilia, Brazil - Gay and lesbian couples in Brazil have moved a rung up on the ladder of equality.

In a statement Friday, the Brazilian government said that gay couples in stable relationships are entitled to the social security benefits as straight couples.

Business Week reports that the policy covers couples who are formally registered in partnerships.

If a gay or lesbian worker dies, the surviving partner would be eligible for pension benefits.
