The Abbey, one of West Hollywood's most iconic gay nightclubs, has been put up for sale.

The world-renowned venue is listed online by the Brandon Michaels Group as "a generational purchase opportunity to acquire one of the world’s most iconic nightclubs and restaurants.”

The listing for 686 N. Robinson Blvd. includes both the Abbey Food & Bar and the adjacent Chapel at the Abbey, which opened in 2016 as an expansion of the original business.

WeHo Times first reported that owner David Cooley had listed both West Hollywood businesses for sale.

David Cooley, an investment banker, first opened the Abbey as a coffee shop in 1991. Over time, it grew and expanded into a restaurant and nightclub measuring nearly 10,000 square feet.

WeHo Times noted that Cooley sold a majority stake in 2006 to SBE Group for $10 million but bought it back in 2015.

In 2012, there was speculation that Cooley and SBE Group would bring the popular brand to Chicago's Northalsted neighborhood, locating at 3532 N. Halsted. That space is now occupied by a day care center.

The potential sale of the Abbey is the latest development to rock the West Hollywood gay nightlife, according to WeHo Times.

In May, reality star and restaurateur Lisa Vanderpump announced she would not renew the lease on her restaurant Pump, which is right around the corner from the Abbey.
