The Chicago Police Department has opened an investigation into why its official Twitter account liked an anti-transgender tweet from country music star Travis Tritt, according to NBCChicago.com.
On Wednesday, Twitter users noticed that CPD’s verified account had shown support for Tritt’s boycott of Anheuser-Busch after the alcohol company partnered with trans influencer Dylan Mulvaney.
“Seems incredibly irresponsible coming from an official police account,” wrote Jeff Wittekiend, one of those sharing an image of the tweet.
The partnership between Bud Light and Mulvaney prompted widespread backlash from conservatives and right-wing figures, including Tritt and Kid Rock.
"There is an open investigation into this matter," the department said in a released statement. "We will not comment further to protect the integrity of this investigation."
Anheuser-Busch has long supported the LGBTQ community, partnering with advocacy groups and donating more than $13 million over 20 years to organizations committed to LGBTQ equality.
In Chicago, data from the police department shows the number of hate crimes due to gender identity have seen increases in recent years.
