New guidelines are an attempt to align its policies with international competition standards
The NCAA has adopted new guidelines for transgender athletes it announced Wednesday.
Instead of an NCAA-specific approach for college athletics, transgender participation will now be determined by each sport’s national governing body. When there is no national governing body, the Olympics criteria would be applied.
"We are steadfast in our support of transgender student-athletes and the fostering of fairness across college sports," John DeGioia, Georgetown University's president and the NCAA board's chairman, said in a statement Wednesday.
The policy aligns with the recent policy changes from the United States, Paralympic and International Olympic committees.
The new policy is effective immediately.
