Advocates demand Human Rights Campaign president resign for Cuomo scandal

Alphonso David participated in discrediting alleged victims of Gov. Andrew Cuomo
Alphonso David, president of the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), is facing a revolt within the LGBTQ community after being implicated in the Gov. Andrew Cuomo sexual harassment scandal by the New York Attorney General. There is demand for David, leader of the largest, most influential LGBTQ political lobby group in the U.S., to resign.
According to Attorney General Letitia James, David participated in discrediting women accusing the governor of sexual harassment.
Before his appointment to HRC, David was leading attorney for Cuomo. Despite his departure as counselor to the Governor, he continued to advise Cuomo and his legal team on the sex scandal.
Among the grievances against David is that he is originator of leaked confidential personnel files in attempt to discredit victim claims. David participated in attacking the alleged victim by helping to write an op-ed, and finding people to sign it. The op-ed never made it to print.
The Attorney General's findings now opens David to possible lawsuit by at least one alleged victim, former Deputy Secretary of Economic Development Lindsey Boylan.
Boylan claims that Cuomo touched and kissed her without consent on multiple occasions. She was the focus of inappropriate comments—an invitation to play strip poker, and in reaction to his dog's interest in her saying, "If I was the dog, I'd mount you, too."
David investigated what Boylan's co-workers thought about her and compiled negative complaints. These were leaked to the media by Cuomo's legal team.
Democratic backers and beneficiaries of HRC are demanding he step down immediately—despite the HRC board of directors announcing in an email to donors that David has been offered a five year extension of his presidency.
Out lesbian Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel was quick to express she will not accept continued HRC support and money if David does not resign.
David has been at the head of HRC since 2019. He made history by being the first Black president of the organization.
