Chicago's Oprah Nominated for Outstanding Talk Show

Los Angeles, CA - The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) recently announced its nominees for the 15th Annual GLAAD Media Awards presented by Absolut Vodka. This year marked the highest number of African American nominations for GLAAD.

The GLAAD Media Awards recognize and honor the media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and the issues that affect our lives.

"Fair, accurate and inclusive media images of our lives and our families have incredible cultural power - and right now those images are more important than ever," said Joan M. Garry, GLAAD's executive director. "This year, audiences saw stories of gay and lesbian families and children in 'Under the Tuscan Sun,' 'Girlfriends' and “Essence Magazine.' They saw complex, authentic stories about transgender lives in 'Normal' and 'Soldier's Girl.' Time and again, story after story, this year's GLAAD Media Awards nominees made a powerful case for fairness and equality, and it's our privilege to honor them."

GLAAD Media Awards nominees were published, released or broadcast between Dec. 1, 2002 and Nov. 30, 2003 (with the exception of television movie nominees, which were released between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2003). Nearly 1,000 media projects were considered in 24 English-language categories and 9 Spanish-language categories.

GLAAD Media Awards will take place in Los Angeles on March 27, 2004, New York on April 12, 2004 and in San Francisco on June 5, 2004. To purchase tickets, please visit www.glaad.org.
