Julianne More and Annette Bening star as a lesbian couple struggling to keep their family together in the comedy-drama The Kids Are Alright. The film opens in select cities Friday.
Kids got a buzzy premiere in January at the Sundance Film Festival, where it was acquired by Focus Features, and went on to win the Teddy Bear at the 60th Berlin International Film Festival.
Speaking to Mali Efman at Screencrave.com, writer-director Lisa Cholodenko said she hopes the film will present gay parents as nothing unusual.
"We were pretty careful to present the two mom family concept in a way that was just completely acceptable, average and familiar," Cholodenko said.
"There are these families in every city across the land. It is not so rarefied, it's not so special, and at the end of the day everyone has the same issues and problems. Marriages endure the same ups and downs and kids have to break away from their families and their parents, you know, go off to college."
In Kids, the family dynamics of long-term lesbian couple Nic (Annette Bening) and Jules (Julianne Moore) is altered in unexpected ways when their teenage children seek out Paul (played by 42-year-old Mark Ruffalo), their biological father, whose anonymously donated sperm impregnated the women.
