The chicken sandwich war has taken a bizarre twist as Burger King takes aim at Chick-fil-a and its anti-LGBTQ donations.

Chick-fil-a billionaire owner Dan Cathy was found to have been bankrolling campaigns to stop the Equality Act from getting passed—through a legal financial scheme that technically hides the origins of monetary donations to anti-LGBTQ causes.

Burger King announced that it will show favor for LGBTQ civil rights and the passage of the Equality Act by donating 40 cents for every Ch'King—a brand new chicken sandwich the Miami-based burger chain is marketing—sold during Pride month.

This means up to $250,000 or more will go to national LGBTQ political lobby Human Rights Campaign (HRC) at the end of June.

Burger King said in a statement, “This is a community we love dearly and have proudly supported over the years, so we couldn't miss an opportunity to take action and help shine a light on the important conversation happening.”

Chick-fil-a CEO Cathy has made many publicly recorded statements opposing marriage equality and other LGBTQ civil rights.

Chick-fil-a promised to stop donating to anti-LGBTQ causes in 2020 after years of supporting homophobic and transphobic organizations—many of which are Christian-based.

The pitch will also help boost sales in the overall fast food war featuring chicken on the menu. Consumer trends show more consumption of chicken sandwiches versus traditional beef hamburgers and cheeseburgers.

According to market analyses, Burger King has been on the losing end of the chicken wars against Popeye's, Wendy's, and the global Chicago-based behemoth, McDonald's.

GoPride.com emailed a request for comment from a suburban Chicago Chick-fil-a franchisee. He has not responded.
