A California State Senator whose drunk arrest led him to admit that he is gay was sentenced Wednesday to two days in jail and three years probation.

56-year-old State Sen. Roy Ashburn (R-Bakersfield) was pulled over on March 14 in downtown Sacramento. His blood alcohol level was .14. After reporters started asking questions, Ashburn admitted he had been at a gay bar called "Faces."

Ashburn pleaded no contest to the drunk driving charges. He must pay $2,480 in fines and fees.

Ashburn has one of the worst anti-gay voting records in the California State Senate. Because of term limits, he cannot run for re-election this year. However, he will have several opportunities to vote on gay rights legislation over the next few months. Ashburn has said that he will continue to oppose gay rights legislation, because he is obligated to represent the views of his constituents.

He is a divorced father of four.
