Kim Cattrall received the Golden Gate Award at the 22nd Annual GLAAD Media Awards ceremony Saturday in San Francisco. The event was hosted by Glee star Naya Rivera with special guests Mario Lopez, Sara Ramirez and Ben Cohen.
The Golden Gate Award is presented by The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), to media professionals who, through their work, have increased the visibility and understanding of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.
Golden Globe-winning actress Cattrall, best known for her work as Samantha Jones in HBO's Sex and the City, was honored for her work and strong support of the LGBT community. She has appeared on the cover of The Advocate and spoken out for marriage equality.
"Kim Cattrall has not only grown acceptance of our community through storylines on shows like Sex and the City, but used her platform to speak out for equality," said GLAAD President Jarrett Barrios. "We are proud to honor such a talented and passionate advocate."
Cattrall can currently be seen in the new film Meet Monica Velour and will star in Noël Coward's Private Lives on Broadway this fall.
Previous Golden Gate Award recipients include Megan Mullally, Jennifer Beals, Stockard Channing, Cybill Shepherd, Jennifer Tilly, James Schamus, and Brooke Shields.
"I had so much fun hosting the GLAAD awards," Rivera tweeted to her 270,000 followers after the event. "Thank you again to everyone who came to the show, and allowed me to host!"
Awards were also presented Saturday to The Kids Are All Right for Outstanding Film, 8: The Mormon Proposition for Outstanding Documentary and Christian Chávez for Outstanding Spanish-Language Music Artist for the album Almas transparentes.
In addition, openly lesbian tech writer Kara Swisher received the Local Hero Award.
GLAAD previously held ceremonies in New York and Los Angeles, with recipients including Vanguard Award winner Kristin Chenoweth, Vito Russo Award winner Ricky Martin, Excellence in Media Award winner Russell Simmons and Scissor Sisters, Night Work for Outstanding Music Artist.
Winning theater productions include The Pride by Alexi Kaye Campbell for Outstanding New York Theater: Broadway & Off-Broadway, When Last We Flew by Harrison David Rivers for Outstanding New York Theater: Off-Off Broadway, and Something Happened by L. Trey Wilson for Outstanding Los Angeles Theater.
This year Glee received the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Comedy Series for the second consecutive year, tying with Modern Family. HBO's True Blood won Outstanding Drama Series.
The GLAAD Media Awards fund GLAAD's work to bring stories of LGBT people and issues to Americans.
