Caught in La Cage

Three time Tony Award winner La Cage Aux Folles struts its stuff again with a new touring cast for Broadway in Chicago.
A drag queen ushered people in the front of the theatre at Bank of America. I was given a special "gay door" to enter in. What an honor!
She then sat on the lip of the stage and gave the audience some lip service but no lip synching, just a few jokes to warm up the crowd.

George Hamilton stars as Georges and with a 51 year old career there are times where a few wrinkles can be seen. He has a panache to the role but there is no chemistry between the mismatched Christopher Sieber as Albin. Also, George can't sustain some of the longer notes while singing and there was wincing from the audience at times. It's interesting to note that George has a gay half brother but refused any LGBT press interviews for unknown reasons.

The reason to go the show is to watch the antics and acrobatics of the Cagelles. The flexibility and strength of these male performers in drag is a pleasure to watch.
Chris plays Albin like a fiddle. He adds nuances and grace to the character. The problem is he doesn't have a worthy partner and only gets to soar when alone on stage. When the spotlight is on Sieber we want that moment to last.

The mascara runs out of town on January 1 so grab a ticket today at http://broadwayinchicago.com where showtimes and details can be found. Never forget "We Are What We Are!"
