Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

January 15th celebrates Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in the United States. It is a time to remember, reflect and respond to the call of that make a difference pioneer Martin Luther King Jr. !

King's wife, Coretta Scott King challenged us saying, "On this holiday, we commemorate the universal, unconditional love, forgiveness and nonviolence that empowered his revolutionary spirit."

We live in a great country, rich in diversity, and yet we have so many that are not treated equally. The King Center (www.thekingcenter.org) has reminded us that this is meant as a "Day On" not a day off! That's a terrific point! Sure there is time off for many of us, but what can we do on that day that would challenge ourselves to that higher calling of "unconditional love, forgiveness and nonviolence?" Now I know what some of you are saying, "He's too preachy!" Perhaps I am, but I bet you can see the importance of Dr. King's calling. It's one that I feel we can all do each and every day.

Thankfully groups like Equaility Illinois adhere to that challenge by securing, protecting and defending the basic civil rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons in the state of Illinois. These are the folks who emulate Dr. King's mission and passion for our rights.
