Gay life in Chicago this week, back in...

1977

An article in Gay Chicago News reads:

"NUDE DANCING and solicitation of drinks in bars has been declared legal by the Illinois Appellate Court in a ruling against the Chicago city ordinance. The ruling, made September 22nd, was made public October 5th based on a U.S. Supreme Court opinion that nude dancing is considered 'artistic expression' by some groups. The soliciting of drinks, the court contended was so broad that it would include a bartender asking if a customer wanted a cup of coffee. Mayor Bilandic indicated that the city will appeal, however, other officials, according to the Sun-Times, are undecided whether they will continue to enforce the current ordinance pending an appeal."

An article by Louis Weisberg in Windy City Times begins:

"Three boys searching for autumn leaves for a school project discovered the body of a man Oct. 1 at Evans Woods in River Grove. Forest Preserve District police detectives believe the man was gay.

"Det. Elwin Trammell said that the man was stabbed to death and that evidence found at the murder scene, particularly the manner in which the victim was stabbed, suggests he was gay. Police declined to reveal the specific nature of the evidence. Evans Woods is a popular cruising spot for gay men, according to forest preserve police."
