Who doesn’t want to see tweaked out circuit queens get their heads chopped off? So when $3 BILL singer and guitarist CHRIS PISS POWERS invited the velvet rope rider to the Chicago premiere of HELLBENT, released via Here Films last month, of course I accepted. A lot of press has been surrounding this film, donning it the "first gay horror flick." So I was intrigued, if only to hear the queer punk pop of Chicago’s own $3 Bill in the film’s soundtrack. And horror indeed; the villain’s painted on abdominal muscles scarred the crap out of me. But first? Come on! We know better than that.

The concept of "Gay Horror" isn’t anything new. I’ve been seeing it in my morning reflection for years. Independent players, like DAVID DeCOTEAU, have been producing homoerotic horror flicks long before "Hellbent" came along. Though perhaps lacking the backing for his films to ever grace the silver screen of mass distribution, DeCoteau has made a big name for himself by objectifying the male form in classic B-Movie fashion. The plot of "VooDoo Academy" (Buy Movie - 2000) revolves around boys in their underpants. There’s also some underhanded evil army of the undead thing going on too, but mainly, guys in white jockeys. And they’re all virgins. And they like to touch each other. "The Brotherhood" (2001) is a cinematic tale of an age old secret society of young bare college boy flesh, which can only be kept young and supple via the sacrifice of a pure, innocent victim. The victim of choice is an A&F type freshman seen jogging in nothing but short shorts. While being forced to drink the blood from the primary demon dude’s naked body, the victim asks, "Why me?" and demon dude responds that maybe he’s the reincarnation of a long lost lover. Both movies have sequels.

DeCoteau’s latest is titled “Beastly Boyz.” I wonder what that’s about? Check it out at www.rapidheart.com.

However those more notable are the movie makers who make movies for the craft of movie making and for movie, not money, making’s sake. AARON SHEEHAN wrote, produced and directed his gay horror, THIRD EYE, completely independently. The film was made over the course of 30 hours this past 4th of July weekend, using a couple of Mini-DV cameras and a custom build computer. Per Sheehan, the film is about “Elliot, a former drug addict, who turns to magic to fill the void. In doing so, he summons a creature that he can not control, that transports him to the true reality,” which turns out to be the remnants of Eden. Ok, sure -- However Sheehan did neglect to mention the hot tantric full nudity same sex scene with beefy lead actor CHRIS McKRAY. Which is probably what most likely got Third Eye the “Audience Favorite Award” at the Route 66 Film Festival in Springfield at the end of this past September.
