Must-See Shows For Chicago Theatre Week 2013

by Danny Bernardo

Chicago is the best theatre town in the country. There, I said it. Artists and audiences have been embroiled in this debate for decades, weighing the cons between the Great White Way and The City of Big Shoulders. Beyond the prevalent debates of commercialism versus artistry, why Chicago wins it for me as an audience member is the sheer diversity of programming offered all over the city at a reasonable ticket price. Chicago Theatre Week celebrates that diversity. From February 12 through February 19th, theatres of varying levels of prestige and size come together. From Tony-award winning regional theatres to nomadic storefronts, the Chicago community can sample a play a night with discounted tickets starting at $15. Here's a look at my top picks to see this week:

This is just a sampling of numerous shows happening this week, which brings me back to my point: Chicago is the best theatre city in the country. Period. Or, Exclamation Point if it's a musical. Because this week isn't out of the ordinary for us, this is how the Chicago theatre community lives, loves, and works year-long. Chicago Theatre Week allows us to engage with potential new audience members by offering discounted tickets and special programming. So if you're a regular theatre goer or a sporadic audience member, use this week as a way to try out a new company. Check out what else is playing here. I've seen a couple of these shows (and will be seeing the rest over the course of their runs) so tweet me your thoughts, using hashtag #BackstagePassDB.
