One show opens and another closes. There are so many theater opening in the coming months that public relation firms are offering even more press openings and dates to accommodate all of the shows.
Two I checked out this week have moments of drag but still keep a live show alive that pay off in the end.
Scarrie: The Musical from the gang at Hell In a Handbag Productions enters its last frightful weekend closing on November 10.
The show still plays well even after the Halloween holiday. Strangely enough the new movie version is scheduled to be released in March of 2013. We will see how Julianne Moore does in the coveted role of Margaret White. This musical is based on the 1976 version though. I do miss Ed Jones playing the mother as in past Scarrie versions but he's still a hoot as the gym teacher.
Celebrating its 10th anniversary, there's more blood, more camp, and more music than ever. Rudolph the Red-Hosed Reindeer prances at Mary's Attic from the group at the end of the month.
Completely switching gears is a remount of Superior Donuts at The Royal George Cabaret Theatre on Halsted Street running through November 25. Written by Tracy Letts of Steppenwolf fame, this story follows Arthur the donut shop owner having his life changed by new employee Franco in ways he never imagined.
The humor rings true with a stellar cast.
