A Delaware man said he was called a homophobic slur and was attacked by members of a University of Delaware fraternity during an off-campus party last Friday.

The victim, Rancel Valdez, 23, said he was invited to the event and spent several hours there before a group of men approached him. One of the individuals uttered homophobic remarks.

"They were just being rude, telling me to leave, calling me names," Valdez, a former student, told NBC Philadelphia.

Valdez said more members of the frat began to attack him and ultimately broke his leg. He was hospitalized and will reportedly miss work for the next month as he recovers.

Cell phone video of the assault released by the NBC station shows several people punch, kick and pounce on Valdez breaking his leg.

Police are not investigating the incident as a hate crime at this time.

"This kind of reprehensible behavior is not tolerated at the University of Delaware," said the university's president, Dennis Assanis, in a public statement.
