Center on Halsted (COH) will host a series of Black History Month events in February. 'The At the Intersections' series will kick-off on Thursday, Feb. 1 with Quiet Storm: The Art & Times of Black LGBTQ Life.
"Center on Halsted welcomes everyone to celebrate Black History Month with programs that highlight the diversity within LGBTQ Black history and Black culture," said Center on Halsted CEO Modesto Tico Valle. "Bringing community together to gain insight on Black History through art, and the resulting conversations, will inspire all of us to take more action for equality."
To kick-off Black History Month, COH opens with a showcase of Black LGBTQ life through artistic expression. Visual and performance artists who will be sharing their work include: Darryl Terrell, queer African-American photographer; Dr. Johari Jabir, musician and Associate Professor of African-American Studies at UIC; e. nina jay, spoken word poet; and Gerber Hart Library, a traveling exhibition of Black LGBTQ periodicals.
"The series examines Black life through art, activism, and social change," explained Joanna Thompson, Community Outreach Coordinator. "Black culture shapes the City of Chicago and Black LGBTQ are undeniably a part of that narrative. Experiencing the perspectives of Black life through the artists in our series is more important for our community now than it has ever been before."
At the Interections, Quiet Storm: The Art & Times of Black LGBTQ at Center on Halsted, 3656 N. Halsted, is Thursday, Feb. 1 from 6 - 8 p.m.
Pride Action Tank, Equality Illinois and DuSable Museum of African-American History are sponsor of the Black History Month series.
