Chicago's LGBT veterans dedicate monument in Lakeview

Chicago, IL - The Chicago Chapter of American Veterans for Equal Rights (AVER) dedicated the first in the City of Chicago Veterans Monument honoring the service of LGBTQ veterans on Monday at the corner of Addison and Halsted in Lakeview.

The granite monument will serve as a sign of gratitude for the service provided by LGBTQ men and women who have served honorably and admirably as part of of America's armed forces, said Timothy Zylstra, Vice President and board member of AVER Chicago.

"I want to say on behalf of our country that I'm sorry it's taken this long," said Rep. Mike Quigley (D-5th). I'm sorry for all those veterans who fought, who were injured, died having to hide who they love."

Quigley was joined by Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-9th) and a number of other speakers and presenters including AVER chapter Vice President and Secretary Jean Albright; AVER member Stanley Jenczyk, who headed up the monument project; and Legacy Project Executive Director Victor Salvo.

Chicago Commission on Human Relations Commissioner Mona Noriega read remarks sent by Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

Chicago Gay Men's Chorus, Windy City Gay Chorus and Travis all performed as part of the dedication in front of the old Town Hall Police Station, which today is home to the Town Hall senior LGBTQ friendly apartments.

The afternoon dedication was followed by a reception inside the Center on Halsted to celebrate the Chicago Chapter's 25th anniversary.
