Historic Day in California as Gay Marriage Set to Begin

San Francisco, CA - Today is a historic day in the State of California as the Golden State becomes only the second state to allow gays to marry.

Last month, the California Supreme Court struck down the states ban on same-sex marriage, paving the way for gay and lesbian couples to marry.

The ruling which begins at 5:01 Monday evening Pacific Time requires officials to issue gender-neutral marriage licences but it does not require them to perform ceremonies.

Many county clerks plan to stay after hours to accommodate couples; however, licence bureaus in three counties plan to stop performing weddings altogether.

With same-sex weddings planned across the state, florists, bakeries, and other wedding-related industries in California are seeing a huge increase in business.
