Dover, DE -
A 12-9 vote in the Delaware State Senate was cast in favor of marriage equality, making Delaware the eleventh state to allow same-sex marriage pending the signature of Gov. Jack Markell who supports the bill.
The state's House passed the bill in April.
"We must use the momentum and the evidence of growing support on this subject to take another historic step toward true equality," Governor Markell said last month in his official blog.
"Together, we will write the next chapter in history and prove, once again, that in Delaware, justice and equality move one way – forward."
The legislation also includes that same-sex unions established in other states will be treated as marriages in Delaware.
Just last week, Rhode Island became the 10th state to allow gay marriage.
Gay marriage bills are pending in Illinois and Minnesota.
