Boy Scouts may provide partial lift on gay ban

Irving, TX - The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) today announced a policy change proposal to remove barriers for gay scouts. Saying "the Boy Scouts of America does not have an agenda on the matter of sexual orientation", the resolution states that "No youth may be denied membership in the Boy Scouts of America on the basis of sexual orientation or preference alone."

The resolution, however, does continue to prohibit adult leadership positions to "individuals who are open or avowed homosexuals... "

The BSA has been under intense pressure from both gay rights and conservative religious groups regarding their exclusion of gay scouts and leaders.

The resolution will be presented to the BSA's 1400 member National Council for a vote at their meeting in Texas in May.
