Chicago, IL - Lisa Gilmore, Director of Center on Halsted's Education and Victim Advocacy program, received a special honor Thursday when she was recognized publicly a Woman of Distinction by Attorney General Lisa Madigan. The award was part of a ceremony in downtown Chicago Thursday morning where the Attorney General, Lieutenant Governor Sheila Simon and Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka celebrated Women's History Month, highlighting contributions of Illinois women throughout history and in contemporary society.

"I want to congratulate Lisa for her continued dedication and tireless efforts to foster equality in our communities," Attorney General Lisa Madigan said prior to the awards presentation. "Lisa has worked closely with my office to build partnerships between law enforcement and local community groups to prevent and prosecute hate crimes."

Gilmore was chosen in part due to her longstanding work combating hate violence against and within the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender ( LGBT ) community. As Director of the Education and Victim Advocacy program, Gilmore leads Center on Halsted's Anti-Violence Project, which provides crisis intervention, court advocacy, therapy and ongoing services for more than 200 survivors of domestic violence and abuse every year. In addition, she oversees the Center's legal program, which provides free legal consultations, workshops and referrals to more than 500 community members every year. Gilmore also serves on the governance committee of the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs, of which Center on Halsted is a founding member.

"It's an honor to stand side-by-side so many remarkable female leaders," Gilmore said. "It's also an honor to represent so many LGBT women who work tirelessly to build and strengthen our community every day."

Other women of distinction honored today include Dr. Sharon Hahs, President of Northeastern IL University and Anne Pramaggiore, President and COO of ComEd.

Center on Halsted is celebrating Women's History month with an assortment of special programs created by and for female-identified members of the LGBT community, including H.E.R. Day scheduled for Saturday, March 10. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.centeronhalsted.org/HERday.
