The Log Cabin Republicans, today, applauded President Bush for his commitment of an additional $20 million for HIV positive men and women awaiting life-saving drugs. Log Cabin has met with the administration on the need for increased attention and funding to combat domestic HIV/AIDS, and is encouraged by the President's actions. "This is a good first step in a renewed focus on domestic HIV/AIDS issues," said Patrick Guerriero, Executive Director of the Log Cabin Republicans. "Congress and the White House must make sure they give high priority to AIDS both at home and around the world."
In a visit to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania yesterday, the President announced the commitment of an additional $20 million for states that have reported patients waiting for HIV-related medication through the AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP). Currently, there are more than 1,600 individuals in 11 states on ADAP waiting lists for HIV-related medication. "This recognizes the seriousness of ADAP waiting lists and brings Presidential leadership to bear. Now it is up to Congress and HHS find ways to correct overall ADAP funding shortfalls."
In addition to the new ADAP funding, the President announced his support for re-authorization of the Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resources (CARE) Act. Log Cabin Republicans look forward to continuing to work with the Administration and the Congress during Ryan White re-authorization to update the act to better meet the needs of a changing epidemic.
While the President's announcement is an encouraging first step, there is still a lot of work to be done in the battle against this terrible disease. "Log Cabin continues to advocate for a comprehensive education program for HIV/AIDS prevention that includes all three of the ABCs, abstinence, be faithful, and condoms," concluded Guerriero.
