New Musical Premieres at Theatre Building Chicago

Chicago, IL - Wild Goat, a new musical from the creators of Urinetown & Hotel d’Amour, will have its Chicago premiere on January 19th, 2004 as part of the Monday Night Musicals – a concert reading series at 7pm at Theatre Building Chicago. Tony Award winning composer Mark Hollman and Chicago playwright Jack Helbig (both alumni of Musical Theatre Writers’ Workshop at Theatre Building Chicago) collaborate on the new musical set on the outskirts of ancient Athens, Greece. Inspired by Menander’s The Dyskolos, sparks fly when romance inflames two of the most dysfunctional families this side of the Oedipus clan.

Composer Mark Hollman won the 2002 Tony Award, the 2001 Obie Award and received two Drama Desk nominations for his music and lyrics to Urinetown. Mr. Hollmann has helped to create some of Chicago’s favorite musical theatre, such as Jack the Chipper, I Think I Can and KABOOOOOM!

Mr. Hollmann recently remarked, “…listening to their [TBC writers’ workshop members] work was as inspiring and instructive as anything that I presented at the workshop.” As a composer/lyricist, he attended the Musical Theatre Writers’ Workshop at Theatre Building Chicago in Chicago and the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop in New York. A founding ensemble member of the Cardiff Giant Theater Company in Chicago, Mr. Hollmann played piano for The Second City National Touring Company and NYC’s Chicago City Limits and taught music composition at Columbia College Chicago.

Writer Jack Helbig is a journalist and playwright living in Chicago. In addition to collaborating on Wild Goat, he teamed with Gregg Opelka on the musical Hotel d’Amour, first produced by the Buffalo Theatre Company in Chicago and has since been performed nationally. He and Opelka also collaborated on My Night AT Jacques’ a modern translation of two one-act comic operettas by Jacques Offenbach.

Mr. Helbig is the author of the plays, Thinking of Her Made Him Think of Her and Kitten with a Whip, produced in Chicago by Talisman Theatre and Cafe Voltaire respectively. An alum of Musical Theatre Writers’ Workshop at Theatre Building Chicago, Mr. Helbig wrote three ten-minute musicals; The Adventures of Princess Snapdragon, Dry Ice and Dinner with Douglas. He is currently working on a new musical based on a popular movie sub-genre from the early 60s. Jack Helbig is a theater critic and arts writer for various publications, including the Chicago Reader and the Daily Herald.

Sheldon Patinkin will direct the cast of Wild Goat, along with Music Director Laura Berquist. Cast members include: Trey Maclin, John Payonk, Niki Prugh, Ana Sferruzza, Derrick Trumbley and many more.

The MONDAY NIGHT MUSICALS is a series of eight concert readings of new works offered as part of a stepping stone process of nurturing new musicals. Members of the Musical Theatre Writers’ Workshop commune regularly throughout the year, beginning in September to collaborate under the guidance of Artistic Director, John Sparks. Members develop individual projects with select new works presented in the MONDAY NIGHT MUSICAL series, as well as STUDIO PRESENTATIONS, ONE ACTS and MINI MUSICALS – all performed at Theatre Building Chicago.

6pm Pre-Curtain Reception & Post-Show Party: Theatre Building Chicago partners with CHICAGO FINE ARTS, a gallery of fine art & antiques, located directly across the street from the multiplex theatre at 1216 West Belmont Avenue. The gallery’s collection will adapt to reflect the themes of each Monday Night Musical. Purchase your tickets at the box office, then stroll across the street at 6pm for a pre-curtain reception, enjoy a glass of wine and “nosh” with friends before the show at 7pm. Return to the gallery afterwards for a fabulous post show party following the performance. This is a great opportunity to meet the authors and artists associated with these new musicals.
