Sir Elton not finding love following performance at Limbaugh's big wedding

When gay icon Elton John performed at Rush Limbaugh's wedding over the weekend, many in the LGBT community were initially confused by the unusually pairing, now comes sharp criticism and controversy.

"I'm flabbergasted," Aaron Hicklin, Editor-in-Chief of Out, told PopEater.com. "It betrays either ignorance or self-interest or both, and jeopardizes his admirable record on gay rights."

The right-wing radio star is known for his anti-gay rants. Limbaugh once called openly gay Congressman Barney Frank a "banking Queen," and said Democrats will "bend over, grab their ankles, and say, 'Have your way with me" in order to ensure the support of gay voters.

"When a gay person turns his back on you, it is anything but an insult; it's an invitation," Limbaugh has also been quoted as saying on his radio show.

Michael Musto of the Village Voice called Elton John a "whore" for performing to the 400 wedding guests, which included Karl Rove, Fred Thompson, Sean Hannity, Rudolph Guiliana, James Carville, and Mary Matalin.

LGBT website Queerty.com says the Rocket Man should be shamed for taking the cash. "There are reasonable things the LGBT community can do to disavow support for people who make a career out of gay baiting, and there are unreasonable things," says the editorial.

"It will be Rush who writes out the check to Elton for the seven-figure sum; money that, let's all face, Elton doesn't really need. And even if his intention was to donate the cash to a LGBT youth group, it's already bloody money, and tainted," Queerty writes of the reported $1 million Elton John was paid to sing at Limbaugh's wedding.

The 59-year-old Limbaugh is also under fire for his lavish wedding - his fourth - to 33-year-old Kathryn Rogers at Palm Beach's Breaker Hotel.

"For those of you who feel that Limbaugh is ‘in touch' with your everyday problems as a working class American, get a clue. Unless you've been lurking in an underground tunnel for the past several days you surely heard that Limbaugh just threw an extravagant wedding (his fourth marriage) and paid Elton John $1 million to perform at his wedding," writes Dennis Bakay on Philly2Philly.com.

Evangelicals have also voiced dismay over the openly gay performer's appearance. Though according to the Wall Street Journal's Zev Chafets, Limbaugh is not a member of the Christian Right and is a conventional conservative on social issues like abortion.

According to Chafets, Limbaugh told him in an interview last summer that he "regards homosexuality as most likely determined by biology, considers other people's sex lives to be none of his business and supports gay civil unions."

The debate continues as message boards, including those on ChicagoPride.com, light up with opinions.
