Exotico wrestler Cassandro speaks Thursday night at The Goodman Theater

Thu. September 6, 2018

Saul Armendariz is in Chicago today as he alter-ego, longtime flamboyant exotico Mexican professional wrestler Cassandro, is the main speaker for the sold-out MexTalks from Latinos Progresando at the Goodman Theater (170 N. Dearborn), starting at 6:30 p.m.

Also scheduled to speak at the event: Erika L. Sanchez, Lakin Valdez, Maria Gaspar and Jorge Silva.

Armendariz, 48, who lives in El Paso and is openly gay, has been wrestling around the world since 1988 – with multiple championship belts on his resume.

"Expect the unexpected (tonight) with the queen of the ring, Embajador de Lucha Libre and Liberace of Lucha. I will take you on a rollercoaster ride of emotions and feelings," Armendariz said. "I am a spiritual being going through temporary human experiences.  In (the) macho world (of) lucha libre (pro wrestling), Cassandro has breaker barriers (for years) – from being the first exotico crowned World Champion to a documentary (about my career that was featured this year at the) Cannes Film Festival, and much more.

"I carry a message of hope and strength through adversity and diversity."

And Cassandro always sparkles, shines.  She is glamour personified.

"Chicago will enjoy, cry and laugh with my life experiences.  I am not a victim. I am victorious," Armendariz said.  "My heart is in Chicago, as (the city) has seen me grow through my 30-year career," which will be celebrated on Oct. 15.

Armendariz was hoping to visit Boystown during his time in Chicago, even if just for a short time.

"My community is strong in this world of (ever-changing) politics," he said. "I will continue to (be a) resistance, to speak (and) use my voice and platform for social justice."

Armendariz added, "Bendita lucha libre nunca te acabes," which translates to: Blessed wrestling never stops.
