Chicago, IL -
As Chicago Pride Fest kicks off Saturday at 11 a.m., an oppressive heat wave is set to hit the Chicago area, with heat indices up to 105 degrees expected to linger during the afternoon hours.
High temperatures in the mid to upper 90's are forecast for the busy festival weekend. The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning until 7 p.m. Monday as humidity could make it feel like 100 to 105 degrees.
Even the sunset won't bring much relief, as the heat indices were expected to remain in the 90s in the evenings and possibly into the overnight hours, the weather service said.
The high temperatures and humidity could lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion or heat stroke, forecasters warned. The risk is higher for the elderly or people with preexisting health conditions.
Doctors urge caution when playing and working outside in extreme heat to avoid injuries and life-threatening illnesses. They urge people to dress for the heat, drink water, eat small meals and eat more often, slow down, stay indoors when possible, and be a good neighbor.
The two-day festival runs from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. down North Halsted Street from Addison to Grace. Organizers suggest a $10 donation upon entering.
Chicago Pride Fest is organized by the Northalsted Business Alliance (NBA), the organization behind Northalsted Market Days, Frost Fest and the Halloween Parade.
