On a vote of 20-14 in the New Jersey Senate this afternoon, gay marriage has met defeat with little probability of a revisit during the upcoming Republican gubernatorial administration.
Current Governor John Corzine (D) has said he would sign the measure if passed, however incoming Governor-elect Chris Christie (R), who takes office January 19 has promised a veto.
After a long, passionate and labored debate this afternoon in the Senate, the vote finally took place around 4:40 p.m. EST. Gay advocates had hoped to garner enough support to pass the measure while Corzine was still in office.
Soon to be joined by the District of Columbia, only Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont currently have legalized same-sex marriage.
The New Jersey defeat follows recent a legislative defeat in New York of a similar measure and a voter determined repeal in Maine.
