D.C. council approves gay marriage

Tue. December 15, 2009

Washington, D.C. - The D.C. Council today overwhelmingly voted to approve a bill legalizing same-sex marriage in Washington D.C.

The bill will now go to D.C. Mayor Adrian M. Fenty (D), who has promised to sign it, possibly before the Christmas holiday. Same- sex couples could begin marrying by March if Congress allows it to become law.

The bill passed 11-2 with former mayor Marion Barry, now a councilman, voting against the measure.

The chamber erupted with applause and cheers as the vote was announced.

Today's victory for marriage equality is on the heels of recent marriage defeats in Maine and New York, as well as delays in New Jersey.
