Annual event raises funds for LGBTQ community organizations

Chicago, IL - Proud to Run (PTR) celebrated its 36th year with over 2,000 registered runners and walkers participating in the annual 10K run and 5K run/walk along Chicago's lakeshore at Montrose Harbor on Saturday, June 24.

Starting from just 50-75 participants on June 20,1982, last year's attendance broke PTR records with 1,700 runners and 2,100 total participants overall, including runners, volunteers and sponsors. This year, PTR broke its goal of over 2,000 runners and walkers, and is positioned to break its overall attendance record.

PTR, which is organized by an all-volunteer, community-based board, has raised more than $450,000 to Chicago-area nonprofits that serve the LGBTQ community. This year's beneficiaries are Care2Prevent, Illinois Safe Schools Alliance, Pediatric AIDS Chicago Prevention Initiative (PACPI) and Test Positive Aware Network (TPAN).

In 2016, PTR led the nation in creating a more inclusive race registration for non-binary identifying runners, and this year was included in the Chicago Area Runners Association (CARA) Circuit Race for the first time in its history. PTR is a USA Track and Field certified event, and presented in association with Frontrunners/Frontwalkers Chicago.

After the run/walk, Fox E. Kim hosted the entertainment, which included a presentation by Urban Pooch and performance by Chicago Spirit Brigade, from the main stage in the Athlete's Village.
