Propane tank explodes on North Side roof

Thu. August 6, 2009

Chicago, IL - Chicago firefighters quickly put out a fire on the roof of a North Side building caused by a propane tank explosion that sent up plumes of dark smoke into the air, officials said.

Larry Langford, a spokesman for the Chicago Fire Department, said the fire was struck out about 20 minutes after the alarm was sounded about 11:20 a.m.

The fire was contained to the roof of a building at 3500 North Lake Shore Drive. There were no injuries reported, he said. The structure was described as a four-to-five story courtyard building.

Langford said workers were on the roof but it was unclear what they were doing. A propane tank exploded, he said. Officials are investigating the blaze.
