Boy confronts thousands of protesters marching against gay marriage in Mexico

Tue. September 13, 2016

A photo of a 12-year-old boy attempting to block an anti-gay march in Mexico is making headlines.

The photo was taken in Celaya, Guanajuato by photojournalist Manuel Rodriguez.

In the photo, the unnamed boy is seen from behind, his hands stretched out as three cars approach down the street followed by thousands of marchers.

"At first I thought the boy was just playing," Rodriguez told Regeneracion.mx. Rodriguez said that when he asked about the incident, the boy answered, "I have an uncle who is gay and I don't like that they hate him."

The Roman Catholic group National Front for the Family organized Saturday's marches to protest Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto's proposal to legalize marriage rights for gay and lesbian couples throughout the country. Reuters reported that a march in Queretaro drew an estimated 40,000 people.

Marriage equality supporters took to the streets of Mexico City on Sunday.
