Anthony Martinez named to senior leadership position at Family Equality Council

Fri. August 12, 2016

Family Equality Council, a national organization that advocates for LGBTQ parents and their children, appointed Anthony Martinez as Director of Communications.

"We are eager to welcome such a capable and strategic mind to our growing team," said Stan Sloan, executive director of the Family Equality Council. "Anthony brings a wealth of knowledge from his past work and shares my vision of bridging the worlds of people who are in need and those who are able to help them."

After founding an LGBTQ direct-action non-profit, LGBT Change, Martinez was engaged as Executive Director of The Civil Rights Agenda (TCRA), an Illinois LGBTQ policy and advocacy organization founded in 2010 by Chicago attorney Jacob Meister.

Martinez served as a spokesperson and senior communications staffer for Illinois Unites for Marriage, a coalition comprised of national and local organizations that fought for marriage equality in Illinois.

Most recently, Martinez was the Director of Communications for FashionBar, a consulting firm that seeks to build Chicago into a fashion capital.

Martinez will be responsible for creating and implementing an organization-wide communications strategy supporting an array of initiatives and programs, including ground-breaking policy and programmatic work that focuses on the interests of the country's three million LGBTQ parents and their six million children.

"The movement for LGBTQ equality has seen amazing strides, but the real tests lie ahead," he said. "As we have seen in this election cycle, there are real and deep societal divides that we must bridge in order to achieve equality for all. Family Equality Council is building those bridges for LGBTQ people and families with the work we do in communities across the nation."

A graduate of Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, Martinez will be based in Chicago.

In June, Family Equality Council named Sloan as Executive Director. Sloan had previously served as the CEO of Chicago House, a social service agency that provides housing and employment programs for those disenfranchised by HIV/AIDS, LGBTQ poverty, and/or gender nonconformity, since 2000.
