Boy George sentenced to 15 months behind bars; plea for suspended sentence fails

Fri. January 16, 2009

London - In a London courtroom on Friday, 47-year old and former Culture Club lead singer Boy George, whose real name is George O'Dowd, was sentenced to 15 months in jail for attacking and handcuffing a man he had met online.

Norwegian model Audun Carlsen, 29, had visited the singer's apartment in April 2007. O'Dowd explained that he held Carlsen because he suspected the man of tampering with his computer.

Last month, O'Dowd was found guilty by a jury.

Despite the calls for a suspended sentence from O'Dowd's lawyers, an immediate sentence of imprisonment was passed by Judge David Radford at Snaresbrook crown court, east London, citing that Carlsen was "deprived of his liberty and his human dignity".
