Cabler OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network will premiere a 90-minute documentary on the life of Michael Sam on Saturday, December 27.
Sam, the first openly gay player to be drafted by the NFL, was cut by the St. Louis Rams before the start of the season. He then joined the Cowboys' 10-man practice squad, where he stayed for seven weeks before being let go.
"Some say the kiss, the cake, it was all just too much," Oprah Winfrey says in a promo clip for Michael Sam. "Some say he wasn't good enough. Others, he should have never come out before the draft. What really happened to the young football star who made history?"
OWN earlier this year announced that it was working on a multi-part documentary series which would follow Sam as he worked to earn a spot on the St. Louis Rams. The series was postponed – and was believed to have been shelved – when shooting stopped to allow Sam to focus on football.
Oprah Winfrey will interview Sam during a special episode of Oprah Prime to be broadcast following the airing of Michael Sam.
