California Supreme Court Rejects Stay, Says Gay Marriages Will Begin June 17

Wed. June 4, 2008

Sacramento, CA - Gay marriage foes have come up short in their attempt to stay the same sex marriage ruling until after the November elections. The California Supreme Court has rejected their bid and will move forward issuing marriage licenses June 17.

The court turned away a request from the conservative right to stay the decision, taking into consideration that in November, voters will once again consider a ballot measure that would again outlaw same-sex marriage with an amendment to the state Constitution, according to Mercury News.

Earlier this week, same-sex marriage foes gathered the necessary signatures required to land their attempted ban on the November ballot, according to California's Secretary of State.

Meanwhile, gay rights activists say they are armed and ready to fight to defend the recent Supreme Court ruling. Anti-gay activists fighting to define marriage as between a man and a woman are quickly raising funds to support their measure, according to the Associated Press.

If approved by voters, Lambda Legal has vowed to again challenge the ballot measure, according to Mercury News.
