Drama on the dance floor

Thu. May 8, 2003

Chicago, IL - Change is good. Variety is the spice of life. If you believe that bullshit, then there is this bridge I'd like to sell you. Honestly though, to keep things fresh and different I'm going to be putting away the "quick chat" and "living 4" segments for a while. They will be replaced with you local favorite DJ's current top 10 dance lists and top 10 dance lists of all time.

For now, we'll school you on the new: From Spiritual Vibe is a track called "A Gosar" on RPO Traxx records. RPO stands for Rick Pierre O'Neil, who is a tribal remixer out of France (from what they tell me) and he's now got his own label which is releasing some wicked tracks. Remixer Nordy Cotto has been letting us have it recently. At the end of last year he released the E-funk E.P. Within the past 2 months he's given us remixes for Anastasia (Love Is A Crime……they're better than the Thunderputz mixes), Lisa Stansfield (All Around The Word 2003) and most recently Jude featuring Hope's "You Mean The World To Me"(Cutting records). For those not familiar with Nordy or his style, pick one of these track up for a listen. He's from Todd Terry's camp of remixers. Miguel Migs fans can now pick up his 2nd edition to the Dubplate Sessions on NRK records. The sessions 2 release is a lot of fun, but pick it up quickly because only 3000 copies worldwide are being pressed. Not to fret though, if you can't pick it up at the record store just go to your local neighborhood internet download thief and I'm sure he'll steal you a copy for free.

Watch for the new Masters At Work mixes of Billie Ray Cyrus' "Achy Breaky Heart 2003". They're fierce. Peter Rauhofer just finished his new mixes of The Carpenter's "We've Only Just Begun". Karen's voice never sounded so…….thin. Hex Hector hands the children a complete retouch of Air Supply's "I'm All Out of Love" - Hex's "out of it" mix is very that way. Angelo Kortez breathes new life into the Barbara Streisand/Donna Summer classic "Enough is Enough". No release date set on these yet, but his "enough already!" mix and "you're boring me to tears" mix are tribal fun. Mz Vaquez has re-trimmed Quiet Riot's "Cum On Feel The Noise", with his Cum On My Earth mix. It's very earthy. And lastly from the oldies shelf, the Rosabel mixes of "It Was A Very Good Year" by Frank Sinatra are supposedly out and about.(I heard Victor Calderone has this one on his website playlist) Hot Hot Hot!

Defected records just pressed out the Olav Basoski mixes of Michelle Week's "The Light". I can see why they held out on these; they are the best of the bunch. DeLoren & Colors throw us "Alessa" on Stereo records. Produced by DJ Chus, listen for the Iberican Tribal mix. Johnny King's E.P. Kingstuff 1 on Work White records gives us house with a snappy twist on it. The strongest cut off this E.P. is "Notice Me". BeatFreak records recently released "The Death of My Soul" by Dimas & Martinez. This tune is hot and has been getting play by big names such as Timo Mass and Roger Sanchez in their DJ sets. The Murk boys are back again with their follow up to "Dark Beat". It's called "Alright". The original doesn't sound too different from DB, while the Southside Drum mix is very Miami and very Murk. 3 beat music brings new comer Tim Scott's release "Funk Sol Disco Tek" to the masses. Tim is part of the Freeloader remix team and his first solo release is cute, with tribal inflections and progressive sounds. My personal pick of the week is Bass & Penn's "Communicate" on Urbana Records. Remixes by Chus (he's on fire lately) make this a banging afterhours anthem that won't be going away anytime soon. India has a new cut on the block called "Seduce Me Now (Seduceme!)" it's on Jellybean records, and the remixers are all Chicago babies. Georgie Porgie, Todd Minor, Terry Hunter, and Teri Bristol all deliver mixes for this track which is already charting in the Billboard arena. Chus & Ceballos (ok, it's the last time I mention him in this column) remix Antoine Clamaran & LuLu Hughes' "Release Yourself" on Filtered Records. This is a smooth cut from the boys of Spain and should be commercially available by the time this music page runs to press.
