Gay themed 'Looking' starring Jonathan Groff premieres Sunday

Sun. January 19, 2014

HBO on Sunday will premiere Looking, its much-anticipated gay themed comedy-drama starring Jonathan Groff (Glee, Bloss).

"The show is about a group of gay friends living in modern day San Francisco, looking to connect, looking for love, and living their lives," Groff said in a promo for the show.

The three friends – Groff, Murray Bartlett (Guiding Light) and newcomer Frankie J. Alvarez (Smash) – grapple with life in San Francisco, America's most gay-friendly city.

Co-creator Michael Lannan said the show reflected "this very unique place that gay people have in the culture now."

"When the world changes so quickly even for the better it's confusing," he said.

Patrick (played by Groff) has come to San Francisco to find love. Patrick's friends are also looking for something. Dom (Bartlett) is having a mid-life crisis, while Agustin (Alvarez) and his boyfriend are adjusting to living together.

"In many respects, the fact that they're gay is the least interesting thing about them," Director Andrew Haigh (Weekend) said. "I think it's impossible to tell a story about all gay people. I just want to tell a story that is truthful about these people."
