Tunney became Chicago's first openly gay alderman in 2003

Chicago, IL - Mark Thomas, the owner of The Alley and Taboo Tabou, plans to challenge 44th Ward Ald. Tom Tunney in 2015, according to DNAinfo.com.

The businessman said it's time for a change in Lakeview and has launched the website "We the People 44" for residents and business owners to share their opinion on decisions in the 44th Ward.

"I think that I represent a different way of elected or potentially elected people communicating with their residents," Thomas told DNAinfo.com. "I think this is the future of politics in America."

Tunney became the first openly gay alderman in the city of Chicago in 2003 and has been re-elected twice, in 2007 and 2011.

The 44th Ward includes the Boystown and Wrigleyville neighborhoods.

Of his counterculture shops, Thomas said, "I certainly am in an edgy business, but this is an edgy community."

Thomas will reportedly announce the bid at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
