WATCH: Jennifer Hudson joins Macklemore, Mary Lambert during MTV 'Same Love' performance

Tue. August 27, 2013

Macklemore: 'Gay rights are human rights, there is no separation.'

Chicago-native and American Idol alum Jennifer Hudson joined Seattle-based duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis during their live performance of the marriage rights anthem Same Love during MTV's Video Music Awards.

In a surprise appearance, Hudson emerged to perform with Lambert for the song's chorus: "And I can't change; even if I tried; even if I wanted to; my love she keeps me warm."

Joining hands with Lambert, Hudson provided a closing assist: "Love is patient, Love is Kind."

Same Love won Best Social Message Song.

"I'll be honest, I really wanted to win Best Rap Video, but this Moonman right here stands for a lot more," Macklemore said, fighting back emotion. "I've been writing songs, since I was like 15 years old and out of every single song I have ever written, this is the most important record out of all of them."

"To watch this song, in the last year, spread across the world is a testament to what is happening right now in America on the forefront of equality."

"Gay rights are human rights, there is no separation," concluded the Seattle-based rapper.

Gay rights advocates in Hudson's home state of Illinois continue to push for equal marriage rights.
