LGBT library and archives reopens after abruptly closing in 2012

Chicago, IL - Gerber/Hart, Chicago's only LGBT library and archives, will begin moving into its new facility this month, according to an email from the library's board.

The library, which houses over 14,000 volumes, 800 periodical titles, and 100 archival collections, left its Edgewater location last Spring. The library has been closed now for more than a year while construction was completed on the new location at 6500 N. Clark in Rogers Park.

In January 2012, news broke that the library was closing when neighbors noticed a "for rent" sign in the front window of the space at 1127 W. Granville Ave. The abrupt move and lack of communication prompted public outcry.

By December, former president Karen Sendziak had transitioned to treasurer in the midst of the fallout and former board member (and past board president) Brad Tucker became president.

Movers from Carney McNicholas, a firm that specializes in moving libraries, will begin the move on April 30.
