On Monday, March 25 friends and allies gathered in Chicago, at the Federal Plaza to make a difference in the continuing national struggle for equality for all.
March 26 and 27, the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) considered two cases about the freedom of same-sex couples to marry. These cases -- which challenge the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and California's Proposition 8 -- are fundamentally about whether LGBT Americans can enjoy the same freedoms and opportunities as everyone else.
Even if Illinois legalizes gay marriage, until these laws change 40 other states won't marriage equality. Also, LGBT Illinoisans will still be barred from any the hundreds of Federal marriage benefits heterosexuals receive such as Social Security, the Veterans' Administration and with Federal Taxes because of DOMA.
