Obama administration to file amicus brief in Prop 8 case

Thu. February 28, 2013

Washington, DC - According to NBC News, the Obama administration has decided to file an amicus (friend of the court) brief today with the U.S. Supreme Court in the California Proposition 8 legal battle. The brief will support overturning the legislation which prohibits gay marriage.

Previously, the administration had been reluctant to join the fray, but in his inaugural address in January, the President said: "Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law, for if we are truly created equal, then surely the love we commit to one another must be equal as well." He had said last year that the federal government should not be involved in same-sex marriage.

The Court will hear arguments in late March regarding Proposition 8. The deadline for amicus brief filings in the case is today.
