Chicago, IL -
In an editorial published Sunday, Dec. 16, the Chicago Sun-Times called for full marriage equality in Illinois.
"It's time for gay marriage in Illinois. Not in the distant future. Not in the near future. But now," opened the Sun-Times editorial.
Last week, Illinois state Rep. Greg Harris (D-Chicago) and State Sen. Heather Steans (D-Chicago) said that they will push for a vote next month during the General Assembly's lame-duck session.
Harris, along with two other openly gay representatives, Deb Mell and Kelly Cassidy, introduced the Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act in February. Harris was also the primary sponsor of Illinois' civil unions law, which passed in 2010.
"The timing is right for us to push this," Harris said on Thursday.
The Sun-Times editorial concluded, "Legalize gay marriage bill now. Stand on the right side of history."
