Gay youth killed during robbery attempt outside Chicago high school

Sun. October 21, 2012

Chicago, IL - Chicago high school student Terrance Wright, a young gay man who recently transferred schools to avoid being bullied, was killed Friday during an attempted robbery as he left his school on the Southeast Side.

Wright, 18, was a senior at Banner Academy South in Chicago's Jeffery Manor neighborhood. He was attacked by would-be robbers at about 3:40 p.m. according to police.

During a struggle to get away from the assailants, Wright was shot in the chest. He was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was later pronounced dead.

Wright's aunt, Kathy Jackson, told the Chicago Tribune that he had been picked on at his previous high school because he was gay which lead to his transfer last year to Banner Academy.

"He had made a big turnaround from the old school to this one," Jackson said. "And now this happened."

No one is in custody. Police continue to investigate.

The Windy City Times is asking anyone wishing to contribute to a remembrance of Terrence Wright to email editor@windycitytimes.com.
