Legacy Walk brings LGBT history to Halsted today

Thu. October 11, 2012

The Legacy Walk dedication Thursday, Oct. 11 in Lakeview

Chicago, IL - The dedication of the Legacy Walk takes place today in Chicago's Lakeview neighborhood as hundreds of attendees will witness the induction of LGBT icons such as Jane Addams.

The Legacy Walk — to be located on one-half-mile of North Halsted Street in the Lakeview neighborhood known as Boystown — will be an outdoor "museum walk" recognizing the contributions lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people have made to world history and culture.

Eighteen plaques will be dedicated today during an all-day event as part of "Phase I" of the two-year implementation of the installation. The main dedication ceremony will take place in a tent erected in the parking lot of the 7-11 on the corner of Halsted and Roscoe Streets. The tented ceremony is a ticketed affair and seating is limited.

The ceremony will feature invited guest speakers Illinois Governor Pat Quinn, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and 44th Ward Alderman Tom Tunney. Singer Matt Alber will be among the musical guests.
