Female dance music vocalists seem to come in two forms. There are the decent-voiced singers who at times have crossed over to have mainstream success, but true pop stardom has been elusive. These women became fairly well-known as reliable artists and often develop devoted fan bases. But really, while not a dime a dozen, they exist in quantities akin to a dime a half-dozen.
Then there are the certified dance music divas: such deities as Barbara Tucker, Jocelyn Brown, Loleatta Holloway, Kathy Brown, and Martha Wash, just to name a select few. These women are truly gifted with transcendent voices. Their respective long-time contributions and respected discographies have made electronic dance music a viable and creative force within the music industry.
Sure to be known amongst this latter group of divas is Suzanne Palmer, a Chicagoan with a voice of gold. She has put together an impressive resume since the second half of the 1990s including her current status as the leading lady at Star 69 Records (that’s Peter Rauhofer’s label). Her breakout hit in 2001 was the classic “Hide U.” She followed that up the next year with “Show Me” and has set a torrid pace during the past 18 months with a string of Billboard charters that include “Luv 2 Luv,” “Home,” and “Sound of The Drum.”
Many who have come to love and appreciate Palmer’s talent have been anxiously awaiting her debut artist album Home (Star 69 Records) and are thrilled to see it finally released this month. This 14-track long-player is produced by the likes of Rauhofer, David Morales, Cevin Fisher, Murk, and Angel Moraes and contains her hit singles from the past year. Through an interesting and broad array of energetic uptempo songs, the high quality productions thankfully allow for the showcasing of Palmer’s tremendous vocal abilities.
In support of this new CD, Palmer will be the first performer of Circuit Nightclub’s Summer Artist Showcase Series this coming Saturday night, a most appropriate distinction for this hometown sensation. A big crowd is expected to be on hand to enjoy Palmer’s performance and testify to the fact that she is a true and certified dance music diva.
