A heat advisory has been issued for the Chicago area today, with highs around 100 degrees. The heat index could reach 110 degrees.
The National Weather Service reminds people to remain alert to the signs of heat exhaustion during the continued heat wave as heat is the number one weather-related killer in the United States, resulting in hundreds of fatalities each year.
The Center on Halsted, Chicago's LGBT community center located at 3656 N. Halsted, will be open today from 8 a.m. – 10 p.m. CoH offers free wi-fi access in the air-conditioned lobby for those looking to cool down from today's extreme heat.
The Center also offers a number of programs and events throughout the day. Check centeronhalsted.org for a complete list of activities.
Tips for Staying Cool
Drink plenty of water, at least eight glasses a day.
Take an occasional cool bath or shower.
Wear light, loose-fitting clothing and a hat.
Close the shades during the day to make homes cooler.
Use ceiling fans if possible.
Keep lamps and televisions away from the thermostat.
Avoid going out during the hottest part of the day.
Limit your amount of exercise, especially outdoors.

Check on elderly relatives, friends and neighbors - call 311 to request a well-being check.
Keep your pets safe and cool.
