Chicago, IL -
Brace yourselves for the heat as Chicago sizzles under dangerous heat this Fourth of July. The Chicago area is under an excessive heat warning that runs through Friday at 6 p.m.
Temperatures are expected to reach 100 degrees Wednesday, the first of a three-day heat wave. Forecasters say today could mark the hottest Fourth of July in a century, when Chicago hit 102 degrees in 1911.
The National Weather Service reminds people to remain alert to the signs of heat exhaustion during the continued heat wave as heat is the number one weather-related killer in the United States, resulting in hundreds of fatalities each year.
If your holiday plans include outdoor activities, health officials caution against spending too much time in the sun.
